Our client needed his plan for a drought tolerant landscape implemented quickly to receive his rebate from Long Beach's Lawn to Garden program. Within a couple of weeks California Eco Design took his sketch, made recommendations, developed scale drawings, and got the job done in time for the city approval. His front yard went from one of the worst in the neighborhood to one of the nicest!

Sustainable Garden Design
Chestnut Street- Long Beach, CA

California Eco Design helped this client convert a typical yard with wasteful lawn spaces into a verdant yet water-sipping oasis. Downspouts are directed to planting areas and washing machine water feeds a dense stand of bamboo. Pebble pathways allow water to soak in. California natives, succulents, and mediterranean plants work together to create groundcover, understory, and canopy layers.

The reduced lawn area still provides an ample play area. Planter boxes keep the family supplied with fresh vegetables.

Garden Rendering

"California Eco Design reworked our garden layout until we had one we were really excited about." -Judi

For this client, California Eco Design developed a concept for extensive hardscaping.

With this client, we developed a plan including raised planters for native plantings, herb gardens, and dwarf citrus trees. A dry creek serves as a pathway most of the time and captures rainfall. A trellis system with movable panels provides shade for an elevated deck.

Californial Eco Design created a 3d model in Google Sketch Up to visualize layouts, views, and material combinations. We used the model to envision different planting plans as well.

An early design had a large social space.

We changed the design to include a dry creek with more vegetable gardens and small spaces.

We adjusted the planting plan after recreating the view from a variety of different perspectives.

Desert Garden Plan

This sample garden concept includes a planting plan, plant list with quantities and sizes, and a rendering to show how it will look after the landscape matures.

A large agave plant is the focal point of this assymetrical arrangement of agaves, yuccas, and aloes. A variety of groundcovers help create a solid mass of blue-green hues. The spectacular blooms of the yuccas attract bird and pollinators.

California Native Plants

"I didn't know what native plants would thrive and look good in my yard. They helped me find a palette that works well with the architectural style of my home." -Matt

before

This family wanted to replace their lawn with natives in this coastal location. California Eco Design evaluated site conditions including soil, solar exposure, and drainage conditions to come up with a plant palette that included a bioswale border. We used renderings to visualize a greater sense of enclosure, minor hardscape elements, and garden details.
